A curiosity of doubts

A curiosity of doubts

These are anxious times for the Australian screen industry. Doubt can wear us down – but it can also help us to grow and create, and change our lives. While society generally espouses the value of logic and certainty, as producers of creative content we grow because we doubt. Culture and science are rooted in unknowns and when we accept doubt, we are more creative and generous - more human. Self-doubt is the indubitable baddie of many aphorisms, but what would life without doubt look like?

Tea Uglow, the brilliant mind behind Google’s Creative Lab, will explore the idea of leaning into doubt and anxiety during an inspiring keynote on the second day of SCREEN FOREVER (12 – 14 November, Melbourne). Tea, who identifies as proudly transgender and neurodivergent, is responsible for a portfolio of experimental design and culture projects that merge physical and digital properties of culture.

She works with cultural organisations and practitioners to enable artists, writers and performers to look at new ways in which we can use digital technology to augment traditional art, theatre and music. Her projects include Editions at Play which won a 2018 Peabody award for digital storytelling, the film Life in a Day, and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and partners like the Royal Shakespeare Company, LEGO, the Royal Opera House and the Science Museum.

Tea is also a prolific public speaker, with her 2015 TEDx talk amassing over 1.5 million views online. In 2018 she was D&AD’s Digital Jury President, and sat on the Cannes Glass Lion jury. She is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique International), the ABC Arts Advisory Panel and the Science Gallery Leonardo Group. She has sat on the board of directors for the Biennale of Sydney; D&AD; and AWARD.

Set against the context of creatives across the ages who have tackled indecision and uncertainty in the engine room of humankind, this session provides a rare insight into innovation, creativity, diversity and novel storytelling techniques and is a must see for any modern creative.
