Sue Maslin AO: New World Order

Sue Maslin AO: New World Order

With films such as The Dressmaker, the Cannes-selected surprise hit Japanese Story and the idiosyncratic Road to Nhill to her name, Sue Maslin AO, for over three decades, has been one of Australia’s highest-respected independent film producers.

Last month at SCREEN FOREVER, Sue produced and moderated the panel ‘The Show Must Go On - But at What Cost?’ which shone a spotlight on mental health in the Australian screen industry.

Sue was joined by a panel of producers and experts (Chris Oliver-Taylor - CEO of FremantleMedia Australia, New Zealand and Asia; Julia Edwards – General Manager of Entertainment Assist; Ellenor Cox - Producer and Executive Coach; Kyla Tustin - Founder of The Create Group) who addressed the challenges to mental health and the strategies for dealing with them.

FilmInk’s Anthony Frajman sat down with the pioneering filmmaker after the session to discuss the major challenges facing the industry, being told no on The Dressmaker, backing films that cut against the grain, and how innovation is needed in the Australian screen sector.
